On a cold December night, five children—James, Sultan, Kartar, Murli, and Reena—were gathered around a small bonfire outside their shanties, trying to stay warm. Kartar excitedly shared that he had overheard people talking about Christmas while selling balloons. Reena asked what Christmas was, and James explained it as a festival celebrating the birth of Jesus, during which Santa Claus gives gifts to children. Murli questioned why Santa would give gifts without a reason, to which James replied that Santa loves children and comes from a distant land, traveling in a reindeer-drawn carriage. Kartar laughed, doubting that deer could pull a carriage, while James insisted they were reindeers. Sultan expressed skepticism about Santa's visits to their area, noting he had never seen him, and Reena suggested that Santa's gifts were likely meant for wealthy children only, as they lived in less illuminated areas. Their conversation was overheard by Mr. Sharma and his son Amit, who were waiting in their car for a mechanic to fix a problem that had caused their vehicle to stop.
