પ્રામાણિકતાની કસોટીરાત્રિના બે વાગ્યા હતા. આખી 'શાંતિધામ સોસાયટી' ઘોર નિદ્રામાં પોઢેલી હતી. જીતુ ચોકીદાર હાથમાં લાકડી લઈ, આદત મુજબ મોઢામાં બીડી ટેકવીને ધીમા ડગલે રાઉન્ડ લગાવી રહ્યો હતો. લોખંડના થાંભલા પર લાકડી પછાડીને તે પોતાની હાજરીનો પુરાવો આપતો હતો, પણ આજે એ અવાજમાં પહેલા જેવો ઉત્સાહ નહોતો.છેલ્લા ૨૦ વર્ષથી જીતુ અહીં ચોકીદારી કરતો હતો. પગાર ઓછો હતો, પણ તે ઈમાનદારીનો આગ્રહી હતો. જોકે, અત્યારે તેની ઈમાનદારી તેના પરિવાર માટે મુસીબત બની ગઈ હતી. તેનો મોટો દીકરો ગંભીર બીમારીથી પથારીવશ હતો અને જીતુ પાસે દવાના પૈસા નહોતા.રાઉન્ડ મારતા તે સોસાયટીના મંદિર પાસે આવીને અટક્યો. ભગવાનની મૂર્તિ સામે તેની નજર પડી અને
