સંધ્યાના ઓછાયા ગીરની 'ધીંગી ધરા' માથે પથરાઈ ચૂક્યા હતા. આભમાં જાણે કેસરી સિંહના રક્ત જેવી લાલી છવાઈ હતી. ગિરનારના ડુંગરાઓ જાણે કોઈ જોગંદર (જોગી) સમાધિ લગાવીને બેઠા હોય એમ અડીખમ ઉભા હતા. હિરણ નદીના કોતરોમાંથી વાયરો સુસવાટા મારતો આવતો હતો અને સાથે લાવતો હતો—દૂર ક્યાંક રમાતા 'ધિંગાણા' (લડાઈ) ના પડઘા.એવા ટાણે, ધૂળની ડમરી ઉડાડતી એક 'રોઝડી' ઘોડી પવનના વેગે વહેતી આવતી હતી. એની માથે બેઠેલો અસવાર કોઈ સાદો માણસ નહોતો. એનું નામ હતું—‘વાલો બહારવટિયો’. જેના નામની હાકથી મોટા મોટા રજવાડાના દરવાજા પણ ટાઢાબોળ થઈ જતા. વાલાના અંગે સફેદ ચોયણી-અંગરખું, માથે ભારેખમ ફેંટો અને કેડે લટકતી
