When we Were Us

This story is The Fading Echoes but only the name is changed

Narrators Pov

The late afternoon sun filtered through the large windows of the quiet café, casting a soft glow over the table where Elara and Riley sat close together, hands occasionally brushing as they talked. The world outside hummed with life, but inside their little corner, time seemed to slow down just for them.

“So,” Elara began, her voice tender but filled with a hopeful excitement, “have you thought about what we want… like really want? About our future?”

Riley smiled, a mixture of warmth and determination in her eyes. “Every day. I want us to build something solid—something lasting. A home filled with love, laughter, maybe kids running around. What about you?”

Elara’s heart fluttered at the thought. “I want that too. I imagine a life where we support each other through everything. Work, challenges, dreams… I want to wake up knowing you’re there, no matter what.”

Riley reached across the table, squeezing Elara’s hand. “We’ll make it happen. Maybe not everything will be perfect all the time, but we’ll face it together.”

Elara’s eyes shone with emotion. “Together.”

Their conversation drifted naturally toward details—names they liked for kids, how they’d share chores, what kind of vacations they wanted, even how they’d handle Riley’s busy work schedule. It was a rare moment of carefree dreaming, painting a future neither dared to fully imagine until now.

When they finally stood to leave, the sun was dipping low, streaking the sky with hues of pink and orange. Hand in hand, they walked out into the gentle evening breeze and slid into Riley’s car.

The drive was quiet but comfortable, filled with soft music and the occasional shared smile. The city lights flickered on as they passed familiar streets, and Riley glanced over, catching Elara’s gaze.

“You know,” Riley said with a playful grin, “this whole future-planning thing is making me a little nervous. What if I mess it up?”

Elara laughed, reaching out to squeeze her hand again. “You? Mess up? Impossible. We’re in this together — mistakes and all.”

Riley’s grin softened into something tender. “Good. Because I don’t want to imagine a future without you.”

Elara smiled, feeling her heart swell. “Me neither.”

When they arrived at Riley’s apartment, the night had fully settled in. The familiar comfort of the space greeted them as they slipped inside, shedding the day’s worries.

They moved to the couch, mugs of warm tea in hand, and sank into the cushions, the weight of the world lifting away with each other’s presence.

The fading sunlight outside softened as the evening settled in, wrapping the world in quiet calm. Elara and Riley had moved from the café to Riley’s apartment, sprawled on the couch with mugs of tea warming their hands. The late afternoon sun, now a golden haze beyond the windows, seemed to follow them inside, bathing the room in warmth as if blessing the peaceful moment.

“So, how’s the company doing?” Elara asked, leaning her head against Riley’s shoulder, her voice curious but gentle.

Riley smiled, her eyes lighting up at the chance to share. “It’s been busy — really busy. We just landed a new client, which means more deadlines and late nights, but also a chance to grow. I think we’re finally hitting our stride.”

Elara traced lazy circles on Riley’s arm, fascinated by how Riley’s whole face changed when she talked about her work. “I love how passionate you get when you talk about it. You make it sound exciting, even when it’s stressful.”

Riley chuckled softly, a warmth in her gaze reserved only for Elara. “That’s because I have the best support system — you. You make the chaos feel manageable.”

Elara smiled, pressing a gentle kiss just below Riley’s ear, the light touch sending a shiver of happiness through both of them. “Always. I’ve got your back. No matter what.”

The warmth of Riley’s breath mingled with the softness of the kiss, and soon they were tangled together on the couch, limbs weaving as naturally as their conversation.

Riley whispered, her voice low and tender, “You’re everything I never knew I needed.”

Elara’s heart fluttered as she whispered back, “And you’re my home.”

They stayed like that, quiet and close, sharing little secrets and soft laughter, letting the rest of the world slip away.

Eventually, the tea long forgotten, Riley pulled Elara gently up the stairs to the bedroom. Wrapped in each other’s arms, they slipped beneath the covers, the softness of the sheets welcoming them like a haven.

Elara rested her head on Riley’s chest, listening to the steady beat of her heart. Riley’s fingers traced delicate patterns on Elara’s back as she murmured, “Sleep well, love. Tomorrow’s another day for us.”

Elara smiled against her skin. “With you, always.”

They lay tangled in each other’s arms, the quiet hum of the night wrapping around them like a soft blanket. Elara breathed in the soft scent of Riley’s skin, her fingers tracing slow, lazy patterns along her back. Riley’s hand cradled Elara’s hair, fingertips brushing gently as if afraid to break the fragile peace they’d found.

“I love you,” Riley whispered, her voice barely more than a breath.

Elara lifted her head just enough to meet her eyes, the quiet devotion shining there making her heart swell. “I love you too. More than anything.”

No more words were needed. They let the silence hold them, the quiet intimacy filling the room like a tender promise.

Slowly, their eyelids grew heavy, and the last traces of the day slipped away. Wrapped in each other, they drifted into sleep—safe, loved, and completely home.

Yet in the midst of this tender moment, Riley’s playful side broke through. Her fingers lazily traced circles on Elara’s back, and she murmured, “You know, if we keep cuddling like this, we might just turn into human pretzels.”

Elara laughed softly, her breath warm against Riley’s skin. “Good. Pretzels sound delicious. I’m hoping we get some with extra salt and maybe a side of cheese.”

Riley smiled, a teasing glint in her eye. “You’re weird, you know that?”

“Absolutely,” Elara grinned. “And I like it.”

Riley leaned down, her lips brushing Elara’s temple. “Weirdo.”

“Love you, weirdo,” Elara whispered back, her voice thick with sleep.

They stayed like that, laughing quietly between soft kisses and silly whispers about turning into snacks, the playful mood melting into peacefulness.

Slowly, their eyelids fluttered closed, and the last thing Elara heard was Riley’s sleepy voice, “Pretzels and cheese… perfect bedtime snack.”

Then they both laughed.

Elara saw Julia enter in the apartment and asked "Hey Jules! You are home how's work?

"Long day " Jules replied keeping her voice light and added "Looks like you two are pretty cosy"

 Elara hummed.

"I am happy for you" Jules told Elara and look both of them then added "Really" .

With that Jules Went to her room.

Wrapped in warmth and laughter, they drifted off—two weirdos, perfectly tangled, and utterly in love. The world outside had faded into silence, leaving only the warmth between them, the safety of a love that promised forever. Their hearts beat in quiet sync, weaving the beginning

of a story neither of them could have predicted but both were ready to write — together.
