CHAPTER 1: HAPPY FACES
June 6, 2003 – A new journey begins
---
[Scene: A small government hospital – early morning]
The walls were old. The fan spun slowly, creaking. The hallway smelled of Dettol and hope. Outside, the early morning sky turned orange, and birds fluttered past the rusted window grills.
Inside the dimly lit maternity ward, a soft cry broke the silence.
> "Waaaa… Waaaa…"
A nurse gently walked out, holding a small baby wrapped in white cotton cloth.
> Nurse (with a smile):
“Congratulations! It’s a baby boy!”
Outside, a nervous young man stood, his palms folded, eyes looking down. His name — Dayalan. A government employee, simple shirt, tucked neatly, sleeves rolled, heart pounding like a drum.
As the nurse handed the baby over, Dayalan’s eyes filled with tears. His lips trembled with a smile he couldn’t control. Behind him, inside the ward, lay Sathya, exhausted but glowing with a mother’s joy.
> Dayalan (whispering, choking on emotion):
“Our Rahul… namma payyan vandhutaandi…”
He knelt beside his wife, placed the baby gently on her chest. Sathya looked down at her son, brushing her fingers over his tiny forehead.
> Sathya (softly, teary-eyed):
“Look at him… so peaceful… like a sleeping soldier.”
The baby twitched. Yawned. And the room filled with the quiet heartbeat of a new life.
Outside, the village slowly woke up. Cows mooed. A cycle bell rang past the hospital gate. Life, as always, continued… but for Dayalan and Sathya, the world had changed.
In their arms lay their son —
A boy who would grow up silent, strong, and pure of heart.
A boy who would one day salute the nation.
But today… he was just a bundle of joy named Rahul.
