The Glitch in the Garden
Leo’s fingers itched for the smooth, cool glass of his tablet screen, but it was useless here. Nana’s garden was a wild, wonderful place where sunflowers stood like gentle giants and bees buzzed lazy tunes, but it was a complete Wi-Fi dead zone. With a sigh, he picked up the rusty trowel she’d given him and started digging near the twisty roots of the ancient rose bush, a job he’d been avoiding all summer.
Clink. The metal hit something that wasn’t a rock. Curious, Leo brushed away the dark, rich soil. He uncovered a circular object, about the size of his palm. It looked like a super-fancy pocket watch, but with no numbers on its face—just a dark, blank screen made of something smoother than glass. It was cool to the touch and hummed with a faint, almost silent vibration.
As he wiped the last of the dirt away, the device suddenly glowed with a soft, golden light. Swirling symbols, like a language from a video game, danced across the screen. Then, a beam of light shot upward from its center, and a tiny, holographic fox materialized in the air. It had sleek, amber-colored fur and eyes that glowed with the same warm light.
“User identified,” the fox chirped, its voice a friendly mix of chimes and rustling leaves. “Hello, Leo. I am Fable. You have activated the Kindness Compass.”
Leo nearly dropped the device. “A… a what?” he stammered, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement.
“The Kindness Compass,” Fable repeated, its translucent tail giving a little flick. “It does not point to the North Pole. It points toward hearts in need.”
As if on command, the Compass whirred softly in Leo’s hand. The strange symbols on the screen vanished, replaced by a single, pulsating arrow. It wasn’t pointing down the garden path; it was pointing directly at the rose bush itself.
“A significant reading,” Fable said, its ears twitching. “The Glimmerwood is calling. The connection is stable. Initiating portal.”
Before Leo could ask what a “Glimmerwood” was, the air in front of the rose bush began to shimmer. The colors of the green leaves and red petals blurred and swirled, opening into a glowing, circular doorway. Through it, Leo couldn’t see Nana’s fence anymore. He saw a forest of towering trees with bark that shimmered with a soft, silver light. The air that drifted through smelled of pine, damp moss, and something sweet and magical.
Leo’s mind raced. This was impossible. This was crazy! He looked back at Nana’s cottage, then down at the eager, glowing fox, and then into the wondrous, unknown world waiting in the portal.
“The need is great, Leo,” Fable prompted gently.
Taking a deep, shaky breath, his fingers tightening around the warm metal of the Compass, Leo made a choice. He stepped forward, through the shimmering light, and into the Glimmerwood.
