Chapter 27: Echoes Beneath the Quiet Night
Night had settled gently over the house.
At JK’s home, dinner had just ended. The warmth of the meal still lingered in the air, along with the soft clatter of dishes being cleared away. Surya and JK tried several times to convince Karthik to stay the night.
“Stay here tonight,” they insisted.
But Karthik only shook his head with a faint smile. Work was his excuse, and no matter how much they persuaded him, he remained firm. Without another word, he turned and walked toward his room.
JK and Surya eventually headed to JK’s room, while the rest of the family climbed up to the terrace.
The terrace was alive with warmth and laughter. Everyone sat in small groups, recalling the events of the day. Conversations overlapped with light teasing and occasional bursts of laughter. Children ran around happily, chasing each other without a care in the world. The cool night breeze brushed gently across their faces.
Here someone smiled softly, there someone cracked a joke.
The entire terrace felt full of life.
Meanwhile, inside JK’s room, a different kind of silence settled between the two friends before Surya finally spoke.
JK looked at him carefully.
“Surya… everything turned out well today. But you still look worried. Why?”
Surya’s shoulders dropped slightly. His expression carried a quiet heaviness.
“I’m worried about my Janu,” he said softly. “I don’t know why… but she agreed to dad’s words without thinking. She just said ‘yes’ like that.”
JK frowned thoughtfully.
“That’s exactly what feels strange to me too,” he replied. “Somehow I feel like she didn’t properly hear what uncle said. Why don’t you call her once and ask? Your doubt will clear.”
JK was about to say something more—something deeper that had been stirring inside his heart—but the words stopped halfway.
Should I tell him about this strange restlessness in my heart? he wondered.
Then he shook the thought away.
No… he’s already upset. If I say this now, he’ll only worry more.
Surya picked up his phone.
“I’ll call her right now.”
He dialed Janu’s number.
On the other side, the call connected.
“Hello… bro.”
The moment he heard her voice, Surya spoke without hesitation.
“Sweetie… why did you do that? I really didn’t like what you did.”
Janu frowned in confusion.
“What are you talking about? I don’t understand anything… explain properly.”
Surya and JK slowly looked at each other.
Their suspicion was starting to feel real.
Surya asked carefully, “Why did you agree to marry Rohan without thinking twice?”
Janu had been sitting calmly at her study table. But the moment she heard those words, she shot up to her feet.
Her heart began pounding violently.
“What? What are you saying?” she stammered, her voice trembling with fear.
Surya then explained everything that had happened earlier in detail.
As Janu listened, the color slowly drained from her face. Her knees gave way and she sank down onto the floor.
For a moment it felt like the world had stopped moving.
But she locked her emotions behind a strong wall.
“Bro… you’re getting this worried for that?” she said, forcing her voice to sound normal. “Yes, I heard everything dad said. But I didn’t understand the whole matter then. Now that you explained it, I understand.”
Even though her words sounded steady, her heart looked like shattered glass.
Surya still wasn’t convinced.
“So… does that mean you agreed to this marriage?” he asked anxiously. “Tell me the truth, Janu. You didn’t agree just for dad’s sake, right? You accepted it wholeheartedly… right?”
Janu fell silent.
Before she could answer, another voice entered the call.
“Hello, Janu… it’s me, JK. Sorry for interrupting while you two were talking.”
The moment she heard JK’s voice…
Tears filled Janu’s eyes.
They slipped silently down her cheeks, as if trying to tell a story her lips refused to speak.
Afraid that her sobs might be heard, she quickly pressed her hand tightly over her mouth.
JK continued gently.
“Janu… only agree to this marriage if you truly like it. If you don’t, don’t worry about anything. We are with you.”
For a moment, only silence remained.
Then her soft voice returned.
“Hello…”
That single word struck JK’s heart in a strange way.
It felt as if her voice was hiding something—something he couldn’t understand but his heart could feel.
Janu continued.
“No… I completely agree to this marriage. If you don’t mind, please give the phone to my brother.”
Hearing that, JK felt a slight awkwardness pass through him. He hid it behind a calm expression and handed the phone back to Surya.
Surya asked again, his voice still uncertain.
“Are you really okay with this marriage… or are you agreeing for me and Ammu?”
“Yes,” she answered directly.
Surya finally relaxed.
“If that’s what you want, then that’s what I want too. Now my heart feels peaceful. But you know what… you’re always smiling. Smile once now too.”
Inside her heart, a storm was raging like a flood breaking its banks.
But she didn’t show it.
Not wanting her brother to worry, she forced a smile—one that carried more pain than happiness.
“Bro… I think uncle is calling me,” she said quickly. “I’ll call you later.”
Before Surya could reply, the call disconnected.
“Hello? Hello?” Surya stared at the phone before looking at JK and smiling with relief.
“My heart finally feels calm now.”
JK nodded.
“At least your doubt is cleared.”
Surya sighed deeply.
“But I still want to know more about that Rohan. He looks decent… but what about his character?”
His voice grew emotional.
“My Sweetie may have agreed… but her future matters more than anything to me. I’m ready to give my life for her.”
He paused before adding quietly,
“If my Janu had grown up here with us… maybe she and Ammu would have fought like kids and filled the house with noise.”
A sad smile appeared on his face.
“Do you know how many years it’s been since I saw her? Her heart is so delicate… she’s the kind of girl who never wants to trouble anyone.”
He continued softly.
“Even when she went to Germany, she didn’t want to go. But she agreed for dad’s sake.”
Surya then explained something JK had never heard before.
“When my father was young, he lost his parents. None of our relatives helped him in his worst times. The one person who stood by him was Rakesh uncle. If we have reached this level today, it’s because of him.”
JK listened quietly.
“When that man asked dad to send Janu to him, how could dad refuse?” Surya said.
JK placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“They only asked until her education is complete, right? Her studies are almost finished. Don’t worry… she will return to India. And she’ll never leave you.”
Surya hugged JK tightly.
Tears rolled down his eyes as his emotions finally poured out.
For the first time that night, his heart felt lighter.
Just then, the sound of small footsteps echoed down the stairs.
Two little children ran straight into JK’s room.
“uncle!” they shouted excitedly.
Manoj said breathlessly, “Chikku… Ammu told you to come upstairs!”
Shravya quickly corrected him.
“No! She called Surya uncle!”
Surya lifted Shravya onto his lap with a playful smile.
“Really? Why did she call me?”
JK chuckled.
“Why else? To fight with you. What other work does she have?”
Shravya suddenly turned to Manoj.
“Hey! Come fast. Priyanka is waiting to play!”
“Hey! It’s bedtime!” JK called after them.
But the children ignored him and ran away laughing.
Surya stood up.
“Let’s go. Otherwise she’ll perform Rudra Tandava.”
JK laughed.
“You go ahead. I’ll call Swathi and come.”
Surya teased him.
“Oh, okay sir… continue your love story. But come fast.”
Then he added while leaving,
“I’ll call Karthik and check if he reached safely. You talk to Swathi.”
After Surya left, the room fell silent again.
Meanwhile…
Karthik was riding his bike toward his room. The road ahead was quiet, almost deserted.
Suddenly, he noticed a car parked a little ahead.
Its headlights cut through the darkness, the light flickering softly as the night wind passed by.
Something about the scene felt unusual.
Curiosity pulled him closer.
As he approached, he saw a man sitting inside the car, wearing a formal suit. He looked tense, as if waiting for something.
Just then, another man grabbed a suitcase from the car and ran.
Karthik reacted instantly.
He jumped off his bike and ran after the thief.
After a short chase, he managed to catch him and grabbed the suitcase. The thief struggled desperately before finally slipping away and escaping into the darkness.
Breathing heavily, Karthik rushed back to the car.
Inside, he saw an elderly man in an expensive suit. He looked wealthy, but he was struggling to breathe.
“Sir! Sir!” Karthik called, trying to wake him.
The man couldn’t speak properly.
Instead, he pointed weakly toward an inhaler machine inside the car.
Karthik quickly understood. He opened the other door, grabbed the inhaler, and handed it to him.
As soon as the man used it, his breathing slowly returned to normal.
The elderly man looked at Karthik with deep gratitude.
“Thank you so much, son… you saved my life today. No amount of thanks is enough.”
Karthik shook his head modestly.
“Please don’t say that, uncle. When someone is in trouble, helping them is only human.”
He handed the suitcase back.
“But uncle… who was that man? Why did he take your suitcase?”
Questions filled Karthik’s mind.
The night had suddenly become more mysterious than before.
Who was this man?
And why did someone try to steal his suitcase?
But even bigger questions remainedWhat is truly hidden in Janu’s heart? Why did she agree to marry Rohan?Did she really accept it willingly?
The answers to all these questions…will unfold in the coming chapters.
To be continued…
