નિશ્ચલ માટે ‘બારી’ એક ધબકતા વિશ્વ જેવી હતી. જીવનનો ધબકાર ઝીલતી આ બારીની બહારનું વિશ્વ એ જોઈ શકતો નહીં, પણ તેમાંથી આવતા અવાજો તેને ચેતનવંત હોવાનું મહેસુસ કરાવતા. ક્યારેક ખિલખિલ કરીને રમતાં બાળકોનો અવાજ સંભળાતો, તો ક્યારેક લોકોના વાર્તાલાપનાં કંઈક અંશોમાંથી તેમના જીવનનું વર્તમાન ચિત્ર ઊપસી આવતું. કોઈ વૃક્ષ ઉપર બેસેલા પંખીના મધુર કલરવમાં ભળી જતો વાહનોનો કર્કશ ધ્વનિ! કે દૂર કોઈના ઘરે વાગતી લાંબી કુકરની સીટી તેને ટૂંક સમય માટે ઘરમાં ખેંચી લાવતી.."આજે જમવામાં શું મળશે?"...નિશ્ચલ પોતાના પથારીમાંથી આ બધું અનુભવ્યા કરતો. એ પથારી, જે ઘણા સમયથી તેની આખી દુનિયા બની ગઈ હતી. તે પોતાનાં જ શરીરમાં કેદ હતો,
