Laughter in Darkness

A suspense, romantic and psychological thriller

By

Kotra Siva Rama Krishna

“I am talking with my daughter. Don’t you come in between.” Sameera angrily said.

“Mom, what dad said is true. Why would he want you to die? He just could not guess that so. He always loved you and liked you. Please try to understand.” Sunanda also emotionally said.

“No, he never liked me. All the time he only wanted me to die.” Sameera was still angry.

“No, it is not true. It is not true.” Vinod was yelling.

“Uncle, don’t become emotional! Don’t try to go out of the circle. It is dangerous.” Aravind hastily warned him.

“Mom…mom…don’t say like that. Don’t say like that.”

But Malathi did not say anything at all.

“Mom, say something. I want to hear you.” Sunanda emotionally said.

But still Sameera did not say anything. After five minutes pause they understood that Malathi went away from Sameera.

“We do see another five minutes and then come out of this circle. I think that there are no more spirits here to communicate with us now.” Aravind said.

Four minutes or so have passed and Aravind was about to say that the séance was over then they heard the voice Sunanda.

“Son…why did you do so? Why could not you wait one or two more days?” she was weeping.

“Who… who are you?” Aravind asked her.

“I am talking with my grandson. He knows who I am.” Sunanda was still weeping but her voice was clear.

“Grandma… it is you!” Rajesh’s voice was shivered while saying that.

“Yes, my son. I am your grandmother Rajeswari.” Sunanda said. She stopped weeping.

“Grandma…I cannot understand what that I could not wait?” Rajesh’s voice shivered while he was saying that. He already understood what his grandmother wanted to say.

“You burnt me alive my son. You put fire to me while I was alive.” Sunanda said.

“No, it is not true. It is not true at all.” Rajesh started yelling.

“Uncle, please don’t leave the hands of the people beside you. Don’t try to come out of the circle. It is quite dangerous.”  Aravind warned him.

“No, I cannot bear it. It is absolutely false.” Rajesh’s voice was with full of distress. “I have put fire to your pyre only after confirming that you were hundred percent dead. You were not at all alive at that time.”

“No, my son. You were mistaken then. I was not dead at that time. Quite inadvertently you thought that I was dead. As you have put fire to my body while I was still alive, I remained as a spirit like this.”

“My god!” Rajesh voice shivered. “What a big mistake I did!”

“Anyhow I want your good all the time. I love you all the time. Please leave this place and go away from here immediately. That Nagaraju is hell bent upon to do harm to you and your people here.” Sunanda said.

After five minutes silence Aravind said “Now I am thinking that grandma went away from the body of Sunanda. We do wait another five minutes. If no spirit comes onto any of us, we can come out of this circle.”

As the five minutes time was over and Aravind was about to ask them to come out of séance, Sunanda started talking again.

“You have forgotten me completely, are not you Tanu?”

Tanuja’s heart missed a beat hearing that. Immediately she could understand who it was.

“Sasank!” immediately she mumbled.

“So, I am wrong. You have not forgotten me.” Sunanda laughed.

Tanuja did not say anything. In fact she did not know what to say at all. She could not think that Sasank would come like this onto the body of Sunanda. If she guessed it in before, she would not have agreed to it at all.

“Why not you are talking anything? I want to hear your voice. Say something, Tanu.”

Tanuja still did not prefer to say anything.

“Alright, if you don’t want to talk, you need not. But this time you have to come with me. No one can stop me now. No one can freeze me in the sea of his eyes or through me in the middle of the sea. I sure do take you with me this time.” With firm voice Sunanda said.

“No, I don’t come. I never come with you.” This time Tanuja vehemently yelled.

“It is not in your hands now. I turn you into a spirit and take you with me by force. Once you come with me you start loving me again.” The firmness was same in the voice of Sunanda.

“No, I never can love you again. All my love now is for my husband, daughter, her husband and my grandson. Just leave me in peace. Don’t pester me like this.” Tanuja was trying not to weep.

“I do what I want. No one can stop me.” Sunanda said without any change in her voice.

“No…No…No…I never let it happen like that.” Tanuja was weeping and yelling.

“Aunt, please control yourself. Nothing happens as you are feeling fear. Don’t try to go out of circle before I say so.” Aravind hastily said.

But this time Sunanda did not say anything.

“I think all the spirits in this house have contacted us. We do wait exactly another ten minutes. If no other spirit contacts us, we come out of this séance.”

With fear filled hearts all of them waited so eagerly looking any other spirit might contact with them.  When ten minutes was over, Aravind said. “Now we can come out of this circle. Leave the hands of the people beside you and open your eyes. Stand slowly and move out of this circle.”

“What is your opinion on this séance Neeraja? Do you believe in paranormal atleast now?” looking into the face of Neeraja, Anand asked her.

“All trash. Just nonsense.” Neeraja laughed loudly. “Are you really thinking that spirits came and talk like that?”

“What the bloody hell has happened in that séance then? You yourself has heard the spirits’ talking like that?” looking surprisingly into her face, Anand said.

“Because of their feeling inside so strongly that the spirits do come and talk, they all involuntarily behaved so. It was all just their subconscious doing. If a situation like that has been created there are chances that people who are participating in it to talk like that imposing spirits unintentionally on themselves. To that matter…” she paused for a moment and said “If I sat in that circle, I too would have talked as if some spirit came onto me. It is all just a psychological phenomenon.”

“Then Neeraja” Rajesh said looking curiously into her face. “Are not you thinking that my grandma talked like that with me?”

“Rajesh, you may not be a psychiatrist or psychologist. But you are a doctor! How you can believe in this type of nonsense? It is an unintentional imposition of character. It is just like a split-personality. No spirits came here and talked. I am hundred percent sure of that.” Neeraja said.

“Vinod” Rose said. “You are such a successful psychologist! How could you think it was your wife and became emotional like that?” she asked him.

“I just cannot say.” Vinod nodded his head helplessly. “Once that Sameera talked just like my wife, I could not think anything at all.” he paused for a moment and then said “Anyhow as you people are talking like this, I am feeling relaxed and relieved from my worry.”

“I just don’t know that I was talking like that. It was just like someone making me talk so.” Sameera said. “I knew that I was talking but did not know what I was talking.”

“On some occasions our subconscious makes our organs work but consciously we cannot know what they are doing. It is very much surprising but it is just like that.” Neeraja said.

“Do you know Anand that Nagaraju came onto you. We all believed that Nagaraju was talking with us. He was very much angry.” Tanuja said.

“It was just like Sameera, to me also. I knew I was talking but I just don’t know what I was talking. I am very sorry that I made you people unnecessarily tensioned.” Anand said.

“Whoever talked in that séance talked so without their intention. What Rose and Neeraja said was true but none of us behaved like that with knowledge.” Sunanda said.

“What Sunanda said was true. We may better stop worrying about it.” Vinod said.

“Did we do a good thing conducting this séance? No one is happy after this. It should not have been conducted at all.” Aravind said.

“There was no mistake at all of you in this Aravind. We all have encouraged you for it.” Rajesh said. “Anyhow we did it for time-pass. We have got wonderful time-pass!”

“That much is true.” Tanuja nodded her head.

“You people have made that much of fuss. So no snakes have come.” Arjun angrily said. “We both have waited so eagerly.”

All those there looked into each other faces with smiles.

“I am now confirmed that your mom did see no snake but imagined that.” Madhuri said angrily. “It is a shame that she imagined so that despite being a big woman.”

“It is indeed a serious insult to me. How much I wish that snake to come here and prove I have not imagined it.” Sameera angrily said.

“That is the only thing less here to make us more fearful.” Hissing out heavily, Tanuja said. It was still very much embarrassing to her that Sasank came onto Sunanda and Sunanda’s talking like that. But if what that Neeraja said was true, there was no Sasank and Sunanda imposed his character on her and talked like that. Even then also, when they visited this house nine years back, Sunanda behaved as if possessed by Sasank. If there was the spirit of Sasank, why he was preferring only Sunanda? If there was no spirit of Sasank, why particularly Sunanda was talking like possessed by Sasank? She could not understand anything.

Vinod came into the upstairs first room and was relaxing himself on the bed there lying on the same. After hearing Sameera so, he felt very much disturbed. He could be relaxed again only after hearing Neeraja and Rose. Yes, what they have said was absolutely true. It never could be his wife! It was just the imagination of Sameera. However much surprising and shocking it might be, it could not be other than psychological phenomenon.

“Oh, you are here sir.”

Hearing Neeraja’s voice, Vinod turned his head and found her there.

“Neeraja, you! Please come in.” he sat on the bed and invited her.

“It seems that I am disturbing you from your relaxation.” Slumping herself in the chair opposite to him, Neeraja said.

“It is not at all so my dear Neeraja. It is not at all so.” Vinod said. “It is always a pleasure to me to talk with you.”

Neeraja leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes. The ceiling fan was going at its might and the climate was so cool there.

“Do you want to talk anything specifically with me Neeraja?” considering Neeraja keenly, Vinod asked.

“Yes sir” Neeraja said looking into the face of Vinod. “You are one of the persons who are closely associated with my mother while she was in Black Ant Mental Care. You have talked with her more, you understood her more than me also, are not you?”

“I agree I talked with your mom more Neeraja. But I cannot say that I understood her in full.” Vinod said. “She often used to loss her sanity. But whenever she was sane, she talked about you more. She worried about you more.”
