“If you were in my place, would you believe me?” he asked her and she baffled as she did not know what to say to that.

“Just do what I said. We shall think fresh everything in the morning. We both shall try to be reasonable then.” He said again.

She still appeared as in confusion and worry but nodded her head in agreement to what he had said.

“I am going into the town. I cannot come to home until late night.” Pallav said.

It was not unusual that he would go into town and come late nights.

“Don’t make it too late. Try to be in home as early as possible.” Jayanthi said to him.

He nodded his head and left the home.

He was in full of disappointment. His hopes were shattered. With that hope, because of that unmitigated desire, he treaded on that immoral path. But it did not work out. He could not get what he cherished so much.

Once in town he reached that house so fast. He tapped on the door and it was opened after few seconds.

“Please come in.” Vinod said

“Is she is in home now?” looking around Pallav asked him.

“No. I have sent her out. She would not come until the evening. I know that you are coming now. In fact she too did not want to meet you.”

Pallav nodded his head. Even in that sorrow and depression that news gave him a little relaxation.

He took the bundle of money from his pocket and put it in Vinod’s hand. “Keep it with you. Both of you live happily. I would not come here again. But if you feel any necessity at any time, please don’t hesitate to approach me.” Pallav said with a heavy voice.

“But… why are you giving this money to me? It did not happen as we have expected it. I don’t like to take this money.” Vinod said. “Moreover you already helped me a lot and I am rich business man now. I don’t need anymore.”

“What your wife and husband did for me is not a small thing. But I am not luckier. By now I have fully understood that the problem is with me also and no one does help.” Pallav said quite depressingly. “You may not need this money now but I feel happy if you take it. What anyone can do if I am not lucky?”

“Don’t think like that. We shall try this with someone else. I could manage….” Vinod tried to say something.

“Please Vinod. Forget the whole thing. For my unmitigated desire we three have committed a very big mistake. Virtually we became sinners. I don’t want to do this anymore either with your wife or anyone else. I am going now.”   Without waiting anymore to hear what Vinod would say, Pallav was about to come away from there but then she came.

“You came! I asked you not to come this fast.” With an irritating expression in his face Vinod said.

“In fact, I intended not to come fast. But suddenly I thought to say something to this gentleman.” Looking into the face of Pallav she said.

“If you do finish fast what you want to say, I have very important works to attend in the town.” Pallav said trying not to look at her. It was indeed very much difficult to him to do so as she was the same beautiful woman. In fact the memories of the joy he had with her made it very much difficult to him to express like that at Vinod. But the moral consciousness which was making him feel more and more guilty made him talk like that.

“You helped my husband that much and he is very busy and successful business man now. You fulfilled our obligation but we are not from our side.”

“It is not your fault if I cannot make you pregnant.” Pallav said “You so happily and completely cooperated with me all the time.”

“Right or wrong we have started that. Why should we stop it now? Why don’t we continue it for some more days? Neither you nor I have become aged and there is pretty good chance that you may make me pregnant at anytime. You said that doctors said to you that there is no fault either in you or in your wife to get children. I cannot say anything about your wife why she did not get children through you but I am confident sooner or later I can give you one as I already have children.”

Pallav did not know what to say and remained silent.

“Please let us continue. Give us a chance to fulfill our obligation. We just cannot remain happy without giving you that thing which you so much cherished after having help like that from you.”  With a pleading expression in her face she asked him.

“What my wife said is absolutely true. In my opinion also it is all better that we do continue it.” Vinod said.

“Alright then. I come here on some other day. I have some important work to attend in the town now.” After saying so, Pallav went away from that place.

The desire to get children was so strong in Pallav. Even he never expressed it out to anyone, he felt it like that in himself. He thought most of the time that it was only because of the defect in Jayanthi that he could not have children. Even doctors said that there was no wrong in either of them to have children, he was feeling that it was because of some fault in his wife that they could not get children. He wanted a way out to fulfill his desire. This idea suddenly came into his mind when he met Vinod and heard his problems. The intensity of his desire made him follow that way even however immoral it seemed to him.

On that day he met Vinod in the town. He and Vinod studied together. His family was a very poor family. In the past Pallav helped him in many a way. Vinod married his uncle’s daughter, Malathi, who was nearly fifteen years young to him. She was quite pretty and they were having two children, first one was a boy and the next one was a girl.

Vinod compelled him to come to his home. Pallav could not deny and went with him. Then Pallav had seen his wife again. She was as pretty as before. Either the age or the two children did not get much change in her.

“Life has become so difficult to me Pallav. I just don’t know what to do. How I can look after these two children and my wife I cannot understand! I am not much educated. Malathi is even more illiterate. What should we do?”

There was a pause and Pallav looked at Vinod’s wife. She hung her head and there was distress in her face rather than shame. It seemed that she did not want to stop her husband at all from narrating their poverty so.

“Sometimes I am getting thoughts of suicide as well. We just don’t know how to get on with our lives.”

Pallav startled on hearing that and looked hastily into the face of Vinod. It seemed that he really meant what he said.

“It is indeed a sinful thought. Before indulging yourself in such type of thoughts just think about your kids and wife. What would happen to them?” Pallav was still in shock.

“I don’t alone die. I shall take all of them with me.”

“Vinod you are talking so bad. There are so many people in the world who are poorer than you people but managing to live somehow or other. If you try, you sure can get a satisfying way to live.”

“Are you thinking I did not try at all? I am saying this after all the trials went in vain.” His voice was only full of depression and sorrow.

“Then what you want me to do?” Pallav asked him.

“Help us. We know you are rich. If you wish you sure can show us a way to live decently and with dignity.”

Pallav was indeed wanted to help those people and ready to nod his head then the thought struck him. A strange thrill swept all over his body. He knew very well if he asked this Vinod would sure agree to this. How his wife Malathi would react had to be seen. She might not agree if she would not like it but could not do anything. But one thing should be in his favour this thing too work if she too agreed.

“I sure help you. I do provide you people with that much of money that you would not face any problem at any time in future. I shall sure show you a way to live all your lives with dignity and decency. You may start some business and prosper yourself.” He paused for moment observing the face of Vinod. Vinod’s face lit with pleasure. Malathi who sat in the nearby chair perched her head up and looked at them. Her face as well filled with joy.

“Please tell me what should I do? I shall sure do that.” He was impatient to hear what Pallav was going to say.

“You know very well how much I want to have my very own children. But unfortunately I could not. I am thinking it is because of some defect in my wife.” Pallav said.

“Yes, it is indeed unfortunate.” Vinod said. Vinod and Malathi could not understand what Vinod was going to say.

“I shall say this straight. There is no compulsion on you. If you agree to this say ‘yes’. Otherwise say simple ‘no’ and I move away and never come here again. But if you agree to this, I shall see all your problems would be solved.” Observing their both faces one after one Pallav said. There was only curiosity in them and no offence.

“Tell me just what it is?” it had become difficult to Vinod to suppress his eagerness.

“I want to have children through your wife.”

Immediately there were startled looks on the faces of Malathi and Vinod. It had taken time to them to realize what Pallav said to them.

“But how…” Vinod tried to say something but he could not.

Pallav felt happier as still there was no offence in their faces. “Yes. That is it. Your wife has to bear my child in her stomach and give birth to it. She need not give it to me. You may look after it as if it is your own. What all I want is a satisfaction that I can have a child. For this I shall give that much of money to you that you people never need to bother for money. You people know how much rich I am.”

“I need no doubt in it.” Vinod said and looked into his wife’s eyes. There was a simple frown in her face but nothing more.

“I have no objection to that. But is it is like some surrogate pregnancy?” the thought of incoming richness made Malathi too happy.

“I don’t know all about it. I will enjoy her as you have enjoyed her for your two children. That is all.” Looking into the face of Vinod, Pallav said. Pallav surprised thinking how he could say it like that to them.

There was only some seconds’ silence.
