Government Eye-Care Initiatives: Taking Eye Care Closer to Communities
Eye health is an important part of public healthcare, and India’s government health system has programmes aimed at preventing avoidable vision loss and improving access to eye-care services.
Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), eye-care efforts include areas such as vision screening, refractive-error correction, cataract care and referral for ophthalmic services. Primary eye-care services have also been integrated into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in many states.
For communities, especially those where access to specialist eye care may be limited, screening and timely referral can play an important role in identifying eye problems before they lead to avoidable vision loss.
Dr. Anchal Gupta says:
“Eye care should not begin only when a person notices a vision problem. Awareness, regular screening and timely referral can help people access the right care at the right time.”
Government programmes, healthcare professionals and community-level awareness efforts can work together to make eye care more accessible and encourage people to take their vision seriously.
The message is simple:
Regular eye care is not a luxury — it is an important part of overall health.
