“What might have happened to her?” as if he were saying to himself, Madan said.
“What Susmitha is saying is true. She died and became a devil.” Still Vineet eyes did not leave Madan’s face. They were trying to trace if there was any type of different feeling in it.
“So you have come to the opinion that what Susmitha said is true?” irritatingly looking into the face of Vineet, Madan asked.
“I know that you don’t believe it. But it is so convincing to me. If it is not so why not anyone heard anything about her? What might have happened to her?” going away from the bed and sitting in the nearby chair Vineet asked.
“That is what I too cannot understand.” Madan said as if he was murmuring. “May be it is true that Mamatha died. But her becoming a devil is absolutely absurd!”
“I am not thinking like that…” Vineet tried to say something more.
“Just stop please. I cannot bear such type of talking anymore.” Closing his ears with his hands, Madan said.
“Alright” Vineet remained silent.
There was painful silence between them both for sometime and it was first broken by Vineet himself. “You did not answer my previous question. Why you are like this?”
“Considering the present situation, you tell me in which other way I can be?” Madan irritatingly said.
“It is quite unusual of you. I never have seen you this unmoody.”
“Presently so many unusual things are happening.” Madan nodded his head helplessly
“Alright then. I am going into the fields. Would you come with me?”
“Have you forgotten that Susmitha had taken a promise like that from me not to enter into the tope at all until she permits me again? We cannot go into the fields without entering into the tope.”
“That’s a good boy. Stay at home then without doing any clamor.” Going away from that room Vineet said.

“You have come again? I thought that you may not come at all.” looking at Sukanya, Vineet said. Even he was feeling happier to see her there again, to him there was lot of work had to do then and if he engaged himself in showing the lands to her he had to postpone it to some other day.
“You have invited me to come into the fields on this day too, so I have come.” Tightening her mouth Sukanya said. Her facial expression was saying so that there was no going back.
“I have some important works to look after on this day.” He was indeed in a dilemma then, since he was not liking her going back as much as he was not liking postpone the works to some other day.
“It seems showing the lands to me is not at all an important work to you.” She did not loosen her mouth indicating that she was still angry with him.
He looked into her face with a casual expression. “Of course, not important. There would be no loss at all if you don’t see these lands, understanding them and come to an opinion.”
“But it is important to me and you gave me the word to show the lands on this day too. I would not go back at all until you fulfill your promise.” She stubbornly said with a frown on her forehead.
“Alright then. Anyhow I shall finish showing the lands to you on this day. You should not eat me like this after this is over.” He could not restrain admiring her in himself while looking into her beautiful face so. Instead of suppressing her beauty, her traditional wear accentuated it even more and her bounty breasts formed a beautiful cleavage under her neck and it was clearly visible to him through her silk sari. Her bra outline was clearly visible to him under her blouse and it was becoming very difficult to him to avert his sight from her luring beauty.
His observing her beauty then tickled new hopes in her and in fact she felt a little dismayed on yesterday when he did not show any interest on it. She wanted some more advancement in him unlike yesterday when he tried all the time to withdraw his hand from hers.
“Shall we make a move then?” trying not to smile and mocking seriousness Sukanya said.
Vineet nodded his head and they started walking. “You have studied psychology and doing practice as a psychologist, right.” He asked without looking back.
“I have completed my post graudation with psychology. But I have not started practicing as a psychologist yet.” She smiled.
“Then why you are showing interest like this on lands? Are you going to do agriculture in future?” continuing his walking Vineet asked her.
“May be I have to, who knows? As you are engaged only in agriculture and stuck only to this, I too may be forced to do only agriculture despite my psychology qualification.”
He stopped suddenly on the track, turned back and looked into her eyes straight. “Not just in psychology, you have specialized in talking ambiguously as well. I could not understand anything just you have said.”
“Now I shall say this straight to you and I cannot say more straight than this.” She paused for a moment as to give force to whatever she was going to say. “I am in love with you and I shall be with you wherever you may be and do whatever you may order me to do.”
There was not much shock in him as she was expected and he produced a little smile. “I have expected this. I have expected this when I have talked the first time recently you have come to this house. I saw something in your eyes and face then itself.” Then he stopped smiling and said. “What I cannot understand is why you are behaving this foolishly despite being a matured and educated woman? How our marriage shall be possible? Your mother would not agree for our marriage even in her dreams. I don’t think your sister either would agree to this.”
“If my sister agrees to my marriage would you agree to it? I am hundred percent confident that I can make my sister agree to it.” Her eyes glistened with hope.
“No, I don’t want to hurt your mother’s feelings either. She being your mother, has a right to think that your life would be in a specific way. I am quite underserved for you.” His voice was firm.
“Don’t talk like that at all. Only because of my mother I have hurt your feelings in the past. I thought that the way she was behaving was right and imitated that. She is haughty and don’t bother about poor people’s feelings. Just forget about her.” Sukanya said.
“No. Never.” The firmness in his voice was irritating to her this time. “I cannot forget her and I cannot deprive her the right she has in you as a natural mother. You may better forget about me. I can be a good friend forever but cannot be a lover or husband to you. I just cannot forget the difference between you and me. You are well educated whereas I am not. You cannot be happy with me and it is vice versa.”
Her eyes became red since she did not expect this at all from him. She felt a severe blow to her ego and she thought he was talking like that only because that she approached him all by herself and opened her heart while without any advancement from him.
“Just go home and think with a cool mind. Then you can realise how much of meaning is there in what I have said to you.”
She at once turned back and fastly disappeared from his sight.

Pallav and Jayanthi were alone in their room and Pallav was trying to take rest. In other situations Jayanthi might not disturb him at all but she wanted to talk an important issue with him then.
“Have you thought anything about that Susmitha and your brother?” placing her hand on his shoulder she asked. He just remembered the last day incident and looked hopefully into her eyes. He could not see any such intention in her then.
“Don’t allow any wild ideas into you. I have no mood at all for that on this day.” She said seriously.
“You are always an enigma to me.” He despairingly said.
“Alright I am an enigma. First answer my question.”
He smiled and said. “Here you are to think about all those things. As Madan stopped coming into the fields, I and Vineet have to do all the things. I am not putting my mind on anything else.”
“If it is a simple issue I would not have bothered you at all. But an unmarried girl is staying in our house without any relation with us.”
“What would be the wrong in it? Why should not an unmarried girl stay in our house so?” he could not understand the logic in Jayanthi’s saying.
“It is not good. Some unmarried girl without any relation to us should not stay in our house like this. She must have a relation with us like Sukanya is having to stay in our house.”
“I cannot understand what you really want. Don’t you like Susmitha’s staying in our house?” looking into her face Pallav asked. He understood what his wife was trying to say but he wanted to tease her a little.
She pinched his shoulder with her fingers and he almost yelled with pain. “When did I say I don’t like her staying in our house? What all I want to ask is that relation must be made as soon as possible.”
“Which relation?” he understood but he wanted to tease her even more.
By then she understood that Pallav understood what she intended to say. She once again tried to pinch him but he stopped her. “The relation as a wife with our Madan. Their marriage must be performed as soon as possible. That solves all the problems and you too know about that.” She explained to him.
Pallav laughed and said. “Yes, you are right. I shall talk this matter with our family priest as soon as possible. But we have to talk with her elders as well.” he said in the end with a frown.
“She quite clearly told us what type of people the elders in her home. We have to get her marriage performed without their knowledge at all. If they knew she said to us what types of complications do arise.”
After her reminding him so, Pallav remembered what Susmitha talked with them before. Closed his eyes and turning aside he said “Alright then. I sure shall think about this and take a decision as early as possible.”

Vineet never hated himself that much as he did hate himself then. His heart not at all liked denying Sukanya’s love so. While he was mercilessly saying so his heart groaned and groaned painfully and pleaded with him not to say like that at all. He did really doubt whether Sukanya would prefer even to talk with him again or not, once he had said like that to her. He was indeed a fool, a big fool otherwise he would not have preferred to talk with her so. She meant it, she meant whatever she said with every fibre of her being and he could see the genuineness in her eyes while she was saying that. In the night when he had gone to home she did not even tried to look at him. It appeared that she already had forgotten him.
